Ecopath International Initiative is the development headquarters of the Ecopath with Ecosim food web modelling approach. We maintain the life cycle of the approach, orchestrate feature development and user support, and are custodians of the open source code.

Given that the last major overhaul of EwE took place between 2004 and 2008, it is amazing to realize that the design choices were made back then are still given EwE wings to date. However, to keep up with the changing world of computing, we are working on a steady modernisation of the EwE engine, such as:

  • Moving from SVN to GitHub to make the code more accessible
  • Phasing out the use of Microsoft Access for model storage, and adopting the Entity Framework and any database format
  • The EwE engine is now 100% compatible with .NET core, which means that it can run natively on any Operating System
  • Devising a roadmap to seamlessly and gradually move the user interface to a OS-agnostic framework too
  • Building a generic, language-agnostic EwE automation toolkit
  • Better isolating the EwE modules for easier parallel execution, mass execution, containerisation and other cool buzzwords
  • Further modularising the approach, allowing other models to handle fishing within Ecospace, for instance
