As the Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) approach continues to gain international recognition — underpinning EU-funded research, informing the work of transnational scientific advisory bodies such as the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), and supporting fisheries management organizations — comprehensive understanding of its capabilities and limitations is vital. In support of this, we offer regular EwE training courses and workshops to equip both early-career and established professionals with the skills to apply ecosystem modeling in marine research, management, and policy contexts. These courses not only familiarize participants with the core principles of EwE, but also highlight its role in advancing sustainable, ecosystem-based management of marine resources. Organized in collaboration with the Ecopath Research and Development Consortium, our courses frequently include guest lecturers and regional experts, providing diverse perspectives and fostering collaborative knowledge exchange.
In alignment with the objectives of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, these initiatives contribute to capacity building, promote inclusive access to ecosystem modeling tools, and strengthen global efforts toward sustainable and equitable ocean governance.
“Strengthening global capacity for informed, ecosystem-based decisions in a rapidly changing ocean.”
In a rapidly changing ocean, strengthening global capacity for informed, ecosystem-based decisions has never been more essential. Our training courses empower marine professionals and decision-makers with the tools to understand, model, and sustainably manage marine ecosystems.
